Planning for Leadership Transitions

Presented by United Way of the Quad Cities Area and the Harris Family Fund for Board Excellence

September 24, 2008 @ iWireless Center

Session 1: Planning for Board and Chief Executive Leadership Transitions 8:30am to 12:30pm

To serve their missions well, all organizations need effective leadership. One of the most important responsibilities of a board of directors is to make sure that at all times the organization has the right person in the Chief Executive Officer position. An equally important responsibility on the part of the board is to make sure that the board itself has what it takes to provide the kind of leadership that is required of the organization's governing body. Because situations and people's lives change, a board must continually be prepared to deal with both anticipated and unanticipated departures at both the board level and at the Chief Executive Officer level. In this workshop, participants will learn how to prepare for an eventual departure and replacement of its Chief Executive Officer, identify steps needed to ensure continual board renewal, and discuss how to foster the development of new board leadership

Session 2: Planning for Staff Leadership Transitions 1:30pm to 4:30pm

To ensure the continual presence of a staff that is able effectively, efficiently, and accountably to carry out the organization's mission, all Chief Executive Officers need to have strategies in place for healthy staff turnover. In this workshop, participants will sharpen their understanding of how to build capacity for replacing departing staff with strong internal candidates, as well as learn how to prepare for external recruitment. You will also have the opportunity to hear from a panel of local executives who have worked their way through various succession planning issues. This session will allow participants to not only learn what the best practices are nationally and locally, but also give the opportunity to interact with panel.

COST

A fee of $15 per participant per session will be due prior to the workshop. Please, only five attendees per organization. Registration is non-refundable. If attending both sessions, lunch is on your own.
